A Promise Kept .... Finally!
Quite some time ago i promised a post dedicated to the person who pushed me to start and maintain a blog.... while its been quite a while since the promise was made and i could come up with a million reasons why it was not kept, i decided that it was time to stop making excuses and just deliver what was promised. So here goes with a slight proviso, "remember I'm not the writer in the family!". Well this post doesn't really have a point , just a series of memories ...
My first memory of her was as a brat running around in her undies. Her being my cousin. Since i was a wee bit older and spending most of my time in the hostel and she most of her time studying at her grandma's or staying at the estates where her dad worked, we never really met that often or stayed in touch. We were almost from two different generations. That particular memory was from a Christmas i spent at the estates and it sort of set the pattern of meetings generally at Christmas time or during the holidays.
The next meeting (again at Christmas) has more memories, we were both older and it was a longer vacation and a it was a time when most of us cousins happened to be at granny's place. We hung around a little more this time. It didn't seem like i was that much older this time . It was a real fun time with the whole family around and i guess that was the first time we really spent some time together. It was a lot of fun , we have this extended family She was this confident and sassy teenager ,affectionate talented, & a really sensitive side. She also had a fight over my other cousin over this guy... It was the first time i got to see she was really mad at me , and i realised how sensitive she could be about sometimes over little things (hope u remember the Dumb commerce female thing !!!) . Well fortunately it wasn't a big bust up and we promised to keep in touch (for some reason she was really surprised to get a letter from me ) , and we did for a bit until i guess i stopped (i guess i was never very good at writing ... hint ;-) ).
Our next meeting was when she came down to Bombay for an entrance exam and she stayed back to do the course. She had grown up into this beautiful and assured and opinionated young woman . Since she was alone in a new city we met more often, she came home quite often and we caught up a lot more often, dinner, movies, discs or for a concert now and then, kind of like big brother showing her around in a new strange city. She found her own was soon enough , but fortunately we got along well enough and she didn't think i was too ancient to hang around with now and then. We had some good times when my other cousin dropped in and one of the most memorable moments was my two women cousins tearing into a couple of cops at 3 in the morning while we were hanging around the gateway of India (oh and don't let her "nice" image fool u , she can curse with the best of them) . She seemed to be enjoying her studies missed her folks a lot , had half the merchant navy coming ashore to meet her ;) got to be a part of a music video and began her misadventure with jet airways. She finally quit jet (after a lot of earache ;)) and shifted back to Delhi and a career in television.
Met her again on and of, granny's place for Christmas, the first time i realised something was different this time, a lot quieter , reserved , aloof at times day dreaming. She used to spend hours staring at the TV and her future hubby . Met her again in Delhi when i was on a short visit there she had broken up , we spent most of the night chatting , well actually she did the talking and i the listening (those that know me know i don't talk too much) . Told me a lot of what happened, how the were still in touch , how he had sent her a book, and how he was worried about her getting home late and alone in Delhi.
Well things tend to work themselves out and our next meeting was for her wedding . Almost didn't make it (my boss was being an a** h**le) and i had even told her that i wouldn't make it. Finally when i managed my leave i didn't tell her that i would be there (thought i would surprise her) and the first thing she said when i met her at the station , "Andy u weren't supposed to be here". Well she did have a lot on her mind, and i think she was happy to have me there (just kidding !!!). Well i finally got to meet the hubby, and also make my first trip north of Delhi. Well it happened to be the 1st wedding among the cousins so all the more special. Couple of things i remember , the bride crying just before entering the church (why do all women do that ? shouldn't u be overjoyed... maybe a topic for a future post) . A friend singing "from this moment " at the reception , seemed apt and also the bride singing (well what can i say she is from a musical family) ... and calling the groom over to join her.
Well since then our paths have crossed a couple of times when they passed through , Bombay and Chennai. They have finally moved back to Delhi . Now have a Son and she just delivered a daughter a couple of weeks back. She happens to share her birthday with a friend of mine (she is gorgeous and before u start , she is just a friend and she is married) . Also the main reason for me to finally deliver (sorry couldn't resist that !) my post.
When i look back it seems like i have been standing still and she has grown in so many ways and experienced parts of life that i still have to . She has changed quite a bit , i remember days when she would never spend a Christmas and new years away from her parents , but now its her hubby and kids who come first. So who is that little girl i first met all those years ago , someone who loves her family completely and passionately, a dutiful daughter-in-law, a SAHM (hope i got that right) , a blogoholic, a cribmeister (she claims that is a woman thing) , the smallest things can make her day and also have her seething in rage, opinionated all in all living life on her terms (i think and hope)...
I must end with something about her hubby.... there was a time when i wondered if she would find a soul mate as nice as her , and today i must say she could not have got a nicer guy (maybe too nice for her)...
Here end the ramblings of an old man ;-) ...... Promised fulfilled!!!!
